Emma teaches the following styles of Yoga
Emma has 20 years of yoga & bodywork experience and her style of teaching is influenced by her diverse and well-rounded experience in many different Yoga Styles. As well as the teaching the styles listed on this page, Emma’s classes are also Influence by Iyengar Yoga (alignment focused), Yin Yoga (deep long holds) and Anusara Yoga (Tantric philosophy with alignment focus)
Vinyasa Flow & Hatha Flow
Movements are synchronised with the rhythmic ebb and flow of the breath. This creates a fluid, absorbing & pulsing experience which is often felt as a primal, connected sense of being alive in the present moment. As breath and movement become integrated there is a harmonising effect on the systems of the body. These styles are sometimes referred to as flow yoga, because of the smooth way that the poses link together and become like a dance. Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic style of yoga, often geared towards generating or shifting blocked energy (like Ashtanga), whereas Hatha Flow is slower paced, more gentle & with increased moments of calm stillness (great for beginners). Emma also weaves Somatic Yoga practices (see description below) into her Classes. There are no set sequences although the traditional, ancient yoga poses form the basis of the class content. The Teacher guides students through his/her own, fresh, new creative sequencing each week using very clear, concise instructions. Emma teaches these weekly classes in Godstone & Brighton.
Restorative Yoga focuses on relaxing the body in restful postures with the aid of props. Note that ‘rest’ is different from sleep. Rest gives the body an opportunity to renew and heal. Countless studies have proven the physical and emotional benefits of this. Workshops contains long peaceful pauses of delicious silence and beautiful phases of gentle atmospheric sounds. Poetry and Imagery is also used to evoke the healing powers of the imagination and to connect with nature, the heart and the beautiful things that make us human. There really is NOTHING quite like properly resting in these, gentle, blissful, delicious and peaceful yoga poses supported by yoga props. With breathing exercises, Yoga Nidra (guided relaxation around body) your stress can naturally recede into the background; spaciousness and calm opens up to you like a sacred sanctuary within to just ‘be’. Everyone’s favourite way to wind down! Look out for Emma’s Restorative Yoga Workshops & 121’s
Somatics is not a different style of yoga but rather a movement therapy, a way of re-educating the way our brain senses and moves the muscles. Soft, subtle & poetic instruction connects the student to their subtle body (energy) & evokes a heightened sensation of being present & connected. We move in a mindful way and explore the inner territories of body, mind and emotions through slow, fluid movement patterns, being attentive to sensation, pranayama, seated meditation & nada‐yoga (the yoga of divine sound). The inner and outer movements of yoga asana become a meditation that leads toward deeper awareness of your inner self and will help you to cultivate trust in the intelligence of your own body. All of Emma’s classes & workshops incorporate elements of Somatic Yoga.

Yoga Nidra is one of the deepest forms of meditations, leading awareness through many levels of mental processes to a state of profound stillness and insight. Laying on the floor with blankets and cushions for comfort & guided by the voice of your teacher one leaves the Waking state, goes beyond the Dreaming state, and enters into Dreamless Sleep while remaining awake. While Yoga Nidra is a state that is very relaxing, this is not the same as deep relaxation. Yoga Nidra is used by Yogis to purify the Samskaras, the deep impressions that are the driving force behind Karma. (Our samskaras are our conditioned, repetitive patterns. Repeating samskaras reinforces them, creating a groove that is difficult to resist. Samskaras can be positive—imagine the selfless acts of Mother Theresa. They can also be negative, as in the self-lacerating mental patterns that underlie low self-esteem and self-destructive relationships). The practice of yogic relaxation has been found to reduce tension and anxiety. The autonomic symptoms of high anxiety such as headache, giddiness, chest pain, palpitations, sweating and abdominal pain respond well. It has been used to help soldiers from war cope with PTSD & Childhood Developmental Trauma. Emma incorporates Yoga Nidra into her Restorative Yoga Workshops
